Canines can be trained in Urban Search and Rescue which involves locating disaster survivors and human remains. Handler/canine teams spend extra time working on agility and off leash control to work through dangerous situations. Often disaster dogs are able to travel in and through rubble from collapsed buildings that are unsafe for humans to search. SSD does not train for disaster but some of our members have trained and gained certificates outside of the team.
