Training Locations

Special notes – Many of the trail head and picnic ground parking sites within the Sandia Ranger District of Cibola National Forest impose daily access fees.

Also – Albuquerque Open Space strictly enforces closure hours for many of their open space access parking areas by locking the gates promptly.

  • Alameda Bosque SE – East of River

  • Alameda Bosque NW – West of River

    • Access to west side of Rio Grande Bosque at Alameda. From I-25…west on Alameda Blvd. Continue west over the Rio Grande River…then just past end of the bridge turn north or right into the gravel parking lot.
  • Altura Park

    • City park in town off Indian School and east of Carlisle. From I-40 at Carlisle…south on Carlisle…east on Indian School. Take Indian School east about 0.4 miles…turn south or right on Morningside (4th street) and then proceed 0.4 mile the park on the left.
  • Bear Canyon

    • City open space and trailhead access near far east end of Spain Blvd. From Tramway Blvd…east to the end of Spain. Turn south or right on High Desert Street and then left into parking lot.
  • Bernalillo BLM

    • BLM open space northeast of I-25 and US 550 intersection. From I-25 at US 550 in Bernalillo…east on NM 165 for 500 feet to the I-25 north frontage road…turn left onto the frontage road and then north 1.5 miles…turn right at Camino Manzano then east 1.5 miles…turn left on Santa Ana Loop then 1.3 miles…turn left go east on Cloud View Court 0.6 miles past the BLM gate to a parking loop. Access to the west side of the BLM area is available for high clearance vehicles via a dirt road leading north just before reaching the parking loop.
  • Bosque Challenge Start

    • Starting point for SSD Bosque Challenge Fitness Test. From Shining River Bosque Access parking area (Rio Grande Blvd at Paseo del Norte)…walk west to the bosque bike path access…then south to the Yield sign where the access path intersects with the main trail traveling south from underneath Paseo del Norte.
  • Bosque Challenge 1.5 Mile Turn Around

    • Turn around point for SSD Bosque Challenge Fitness Test. From the Bosque Challenge Start point S.BC01…walk 1.5 miles south on the bike path. The turn around is located about 225 feet north of a park bench on the west side of the path or just west of a white house with red roof.
  • Calabacillas Arroyo

    • City open space and trailhead access on west bank of Rio Grande Valley State Park at the east end of Calabacillas Arroyo. From Paseo del North…take Coors Blvd north 0.8 miles. Turn east on Westside Dr NW for 0.2 miles then follow the arroyo bank road 0.3 miles to the dirt parking at the edge of the bosque.
  • Capulin Snow Play Area

  • Cedro Peak Campground

    • Forest Service campground area about 7 miles southeast of Tijeras. From I-40…take exit 175 into Tijeras. Take NM 337 south for 6.3 miles…turn east or left onto Juan Tomas Rd (FR 242). Go another 0.6 mile turn north or left onto FR 252 and go 1.5 miles to campground on left.
  • Chamisoso Canyon

    • Forest Service area about 1.5 miles southeast of Tijeras. From I-40…take exit 175 into Tijeras. Take NM 337 south for 1.3 miles….turn east or left onto Chamisoso Canyon Road (FR 462). Go past the first parking lots and follow FR 462-FR 462A about 1.5 miles to gate marking end of public access.
  • Cienega Canyon Picnic Area

    • Forest Service picnic area several miles up the Sandia Crest Highway. Same entrance as Sulfur Canyon. From I-40…take NM 14 north 5.8 miles. Take NM 536 (Crest Highway) west 1.9 miles to the sign…follow the left fork about 0.5 mile to picnic ground entrance…turn right to the parking near the restrooms.
  • Cienega Horse Bypass

    • Forest Service equestrian trailhead several miles up the Sandia Crest Highway. Same entrance as Sulfur Canyon. From I-40…take NM 14 north 5.8 miles. Take NM 536 (Crest Highway) west 1.9 miles to the sign…follow the left fork about 0.25 mile to the top of the hill, then turn left and follow the unpaved road to the parking area.
  • Conchas Park

    • City park in town south of Candelaria (or north of Menual) between Moon and Eubank. From Candelaria south on Moon, east on Claremont Ave-Parsifal St to the park on left. Parking is along Claremont Ave and Conchas St towards southeast side of park.
  • Copper Trailhead

    • City open space and trailhead access at the east end of Copper. From Tramway Blvd (south of Lomas)…east on Copper to small parking lot at end of road.
  • Corrales-North End

    • Rio Grande River access from north of Corrales. From NM 528 (north of Rio Rancho) take NM 448 (Corrales Rd) 0.7 mile east or from Alameda Blvd take NM 448 (Corrales Rd) 6.1 miles north to the Corrales Main Canal…then turn north on the dirt access road located on the west side of the Canal. Follow this dirt road north about 0.85 miles to the small parking area on the west bank of Rio Grande River.
  • Coronado State Monument

    • Rio Grande River access on northwest side of Bernalillo off US 550. From I-25…take US 550 west through Bernalillo. About 0.3 miles west of the Rio Grande River turn north or right at the sign and follow Kuana Rd to park headquarters.
  • David Canyon

    • Forest Service area access about 9 miles south of Tijeras via Raven Rd. From I-40…take exit 175 into Tijeras. Take NM 337 south for 8.8 miles…turn west or right onto Raven Rd. Continue on Raven Rd 1.5 miles then turn west or right on Mars Court or FR 530. Continue through the gate to the new parking lot.
  • Doc Long Picnic Area

  • El Oso Grande Park

    • City park in town adjacent to CNM Montoya Campus near Montgomery and Morris. From Montgomery….north on Morris past the CNM campus parking…turn east or right on Osuna for street side parking along north side of park.
  • Elena Gallegos

    • City open space area and foothills trail access off Tramway just north of Academy. From Tramway Blvd just north of Academy…turn east at the brown sign and follow Simms Park Road into Elena Gallegos Picnic Area. Follow looping park road to the northeast parking lot.
  • Ellis Trailhead

    • Forest Service trail access about 12 miles up the Sandia Crest Highway. From I-40…take NM 14 north 5.8 miles. Take NM 536 (Crest Highway) west 12.2 miles. Paved parking lot and restrooms are located on the south side of the road. An unpaved area is located on the north side of the road. The gated road on the south side parking lot leads to the Upper Tram Terminal and top sections of the Sandia Ski area.
  • Embudo Canyon

    • City open space area and foothills trail access at east end of Indian School. From Tramway…turn east on Indian School and follow road to the end.
  • Embudito Canyon

    • City open space area and foothills trail access near east end of Montgomery. From Tramway…east on Montgomery. Turn north or left onto Glenwood Hills Dr and continue north about 0.5 mile until the trail head sign…turn east or right onto Trailhead Rd and proceed to open space parking lot.
  • Golden Open Space

    • City open space area and trail access near La Madera in East Mountain. From I-40 E take NM-14 N about 7 miles to la Madera Rd. Follow La Madera Rd for 9.4 miles to parking area on east side of road.
  • Hoffman Park

    • City park in town near Wyoming and Menaul. From Menaul…go north on Wyoming…turn east or right on Claremont Ave and then south or right on General Arnold then east or left on Fairbanks Rd. Alternate approach from the south side of park…From Menaul…go north one block on Wyoming…turn east or right on Flower Place…right at General Bradley and left at Phoenix and proceed to the park. Team normally gathers on northeast side of park off Fairbanks or Mesa Linda.
  • Jemez Mountains – Banco Bonito

    • Forest Service access near the Redondo Campground off NM 4. From I-25 at Bernalillo…take US 550 west to San Ysidro. Turn north or right onto NM 4 and proceed 26.2 miles to NM 126 junction in La Cueva north of Jemez Springs. From the intersection with NM 126…continue north and east on NM 4 about 2.4 miles to Banco Bonito parking located on the south or right side of the road and across from the Redondo Campground.
  • Jemez Mountains – Cochiti Access
    • Waypoint: S.JMCA  Google Map UTM WGS84 13S 375171E 3950386N
    • Forest Service access northwest of Cochiti Lake via BIA90 and FR 268. Take I-25 north to Exit 259 for Santo Domingo-NM 22. Go 12.1 miles west on NM 22 through Pena Blanca and to BIA90 where NM 22 veers left at Cochiti Dam. Proceed northwest 5.6 miles on BIA90 going past the golf course and a mile or so past where the pavement turns to dirt or gravel to reach unmarked FR 268. Take FR 268 west or left about 3 miles to the cattle guard marking entrance to Santa Fe National Forest. Use the third turn out on the left for training area. Coming from the East Mountains…take NM 22 from NM 14 to I-25 and follow above directions. Coordinates are for BIA90 and FR 268 turn off. If you miss the turn and go straight you head to Dixon Apple Farm FR 289.
  • Jemez Mountains – East Fork

    • Forest Service access to East Fork Trail 137 off NM 4 about 0.3 miles east of Jemez Falls Rd. From I-25 at Bernalillo…take US 550 west to San Ysidro. Turn north or right onto NM 4 and proceed 26.2 miles to NM 126 junction in La Cueva north of Jemez Springs. From the intersection with NM 126…continue north and east on NM 4 about 5.8 miles to East Fork Trail 137.
  • Jemez Mountains – Jemez Falls

    • Forest Service access to Jemez River Falls about 4 miles east of Redondo Campground. From I-25 at Bernalillo…take US 550 west to San Ysidro. Turn north or right onto NM 4 and proceed 26.2 miles to NM 126 junction in La Cueva north of Jemez Springs. From the intersection with NM 126…continue north and east on NM 4 about 5.4 miles to Jemez Falls entrance located on the south or right side of the road. Continue to the parking lot while passing campground on right
  • Jemez Mountains – Ponderosa Area

    • Forest Service access north of the Ponderosa village. From I-25 at Bernalillo…take US 550 west to San Ysidro. Turn north or right onto NM 4 and proceed to 6.2 miles to NM 290 located at the bottom of the hill just north of Jemez Pueblo. Take NM 290 east or right and proceed about 9.2 miles to training area passing through Ponderosa village about 4 miles from NM 4. Training is conducted 3 to 6 miles north of Ponderosa so be sure to confirm the exact location.
  • Jemez Mountains – San Antonio Area

    • Forest Service access to FR 144 northwest of La Cueva and NM 4.From I-25 at Bernalillo…take US 550 west to San Ysidro. Turn north or right onto NM 4 and proceed 26.2 miles to NM 126 junction in La Cueva north of Jemez Springs. Turn west or left on NM 126 and proceed west about 5.8 miles. Near mile marker 33 turn north or right on FR 144 and proceed about 8.7 miles to the sign reading Transplant station #2. Training area is the two track road going to the right.
  • Juan Tomas

    • Forest Service trail access farther east past Sabino Canyon/Cedro Peak. From I-40…take exit 175 into Tijeras. Take NM 337 south for 6.3 miles…turn east or left onto Juan Tomas Rd (FR 242). Go another 2.5 mile to small parking area on right with iron pipe fencing.
  • Juan Tomas Open Space

    • Albuquerque Open Space area is located about 9 miles south of Tijeras. From I-40…take exit 175 into Tijeras. Take NM 337 south about 8.7 miles…turn left onto Oak Flat Road and proceed past the entrance to Oak Flats for 1.7 mi.  The parking area is on the north of the road immediately before the road turns to the south.  Note: Parking is limited so double park when necessary.
  • Kiwanis Meadow

    • Forest service area adjacent to Sandia Crest Trail between Crest House and the Upper Tram Terminal. Reached by a short hike south from Sandia Crest House parking. From I-40…take NM 14 north 5.8 miles. Take NM 536 (Crest Highway) west 14 miles to the top of the Sandia Crest. From the south end of the lower parking lot…hike south on the old forest service road and marked trail about 0.4 miles to the north edge of the Meadow. Kiwanis Cabin is located in the southwest corner on the meadow. Forest Service closures of this area have occurred in recent years for rehab of the meadow.
  • La Cueva Picnic Area

    • Trailhead access via far northeast Tramway Blvd and FR 333-FR 333B. From Tramway about 1 mile north of the road to the Tram…turn northeast onto FR 333 at the Juan Tabo Picnic Area sign. Just past the cattle guard…turn east onto FR 333B and follow about 1.1 mile to picnic and trailhead area. Pay USFS fee when not on official mission otherwise you get a ticket from zealous lot attendant.
  • La Luz Trail

    • Trailhead access via far northeast Tramway Blvd and FR 333. From Tramway about 1 mile north of the road to the Tram…turn northeast onto FR 333 at the Juan Tabo Picnic Area sign. Take FR 333 about 1.9 miles…turn east or right at the second rock pillars and continue 0.5 mile east to the La Luz Trailhead parking. Ignore several right turns into the Juan Tabo picnic area below La Luz Trailhead. Pay USFS fee when not on official mission otherwise you get a ticket from zealous lot attendant.
  • Las Huertas Canyon

    • Training area is a meadow south of Placitas on the gravel portion of State Road 165.From I-25 at Bernalillo…take NM 165 east through Placitas and continue south past the end of the pavement for about 10 minutes. Or from NM14 travel up the Sandia Crest Highway or NM 536 about 8 miles to NM 165 and then follow this gravel road about 4 miles north to the meadow. Coordinates are approximate location.
  • Los Poblanos Open Space

    • City Open Space in town adjacent to Montano west of 4th Street. From Montano and 4th St…west on Montano for about 1 mile past a traffic light. Turn north onto Tierra Vista at the brown LPOS sign and proceed about a city block and then park on the left when the road turns back to the right. No gates to be stuck behind.
  • Loma del Norte Park

    • City park in town between Louisiana and Wyoming and north of San Antonio. From I-25…east on San Antonio, turn north on Wyoming and proceed about 0.4 miles, turn west on Loma Del Norte Rd and go about a block to the park.
  • Lynnewood Park

    • City park in town off Candelaria just west of Tramway. From Tramway…turn west on Candelaria and proceed about one block then turn south or left on Marie Park and go another block or so.
  • Mariposa Basin Park

    • City park in town westside…north of Montano Rd along westside of Taylor Ranch Rd. From Coors Blvd at Montano…west 0.5 miles on Montano…right on Taylor Ranch Rd then north 0.2 miles…left on Kachina St NW and then right onto the park road leading north to the large parking area.
  • Montano Bridge Open Space

    • City Open Space in town located at west end of Montano Bridge. Designated by the City as Pueblo Montano Picnic Area and Trailhead. From Montano Blvd…0.2 miles east of the Coors Blvd intersection turn south to parking area located on SW corner of the Montano bridge where the tree trunks are carved.
  • Montgomery Park

    • City park in town along Comanche between San Mateo and San Pedro. From Sam Mateo…turn east on Comanche and proceed about one-quarter mile to parking on the south side of the park.
  • Netherwood Park

    • City park in town off Indian School west of Carlisle. From I-40…south on Carlisle then west onto Indian School and proceed about 0.7 mile. Turn north or right onto Princeton and proceed about 2 blocks to the park on the left.
  • Nine Mile Picnic Area

    • Forest Service area about 9 miles up the Sandia Crest Highway. From I-40…take NM 14 north 5.8 miles then NM 536 (Crest Highway) west 9.0 miles. Look for sign on right and turn left in picnic area. This area has been closed for rehabilitation in 2009.
  • Oak Flat Picnic Area

    • Forest Service area about 9 miles south of Tijeras. From I-40…take exit 175 into Tijeras. Take NM 337 south about 8.7 miles…turn left onto Oak Flat Road and proceed 0.9 miles to picnic area entrance on the left.
  • Ojito Wilderness BLM Area

    • BLM wilderness area west southwest of San Ysidro accessed via Cabezon Rd from US 550.From I-25 at Bernalillo…take US 550 northwest about 21 miles to Cabezon Rd about 2 miles south of San Ysidro. Turn west onto Cabezon Road (CR 906)…then very quickly take the left fork and follow Cabezon Rd past the White Mesa Bike Trails parking lot at 4.5 miles. Bear right at 5.8 miles and proceed another 5.2 miles to the small pull off at the training site about 11 miles west of US 550.Caution – Muddy and slick road conditions in wet weather requiring 4×4 vehicle.
  • Open Space Warehouse

    • Albuquerque Open Space Warehouse east of I-25 and south of Albuquerque’s Sunport Airport. From I-25 at Rio Bravo…west on Rio Bravo. Turn south on Broadway then go 1.8 miles, turn east on Bobby Foster Rd and go back over I-25. At the three way stop, turn north on Los Picaros Rd and continue 3.1 miles to the warehouse just past the Montessa Park city dump.
  • Otero Canyon

    • Forest Service foot and mountain bike trail access about 4 miles south of Tijeras. From I-40…take exit 175 into Tijeras. Take NM 337 south about 3.9 miles to parking on west or right side.
  • Piedra Lisa Trailhead – North

    • Sandia Mountains northern access from the Placitas area. From I-25 at Bernalillo…east about 3.1 miles on NM 165 towards Placitas. Turn south on FR 445 and proceed about 1.7 miles to trail head on east or left side of FR 445.
  • Piedra Lisa Trailhead – South

    • Trailhead access via far northeast Tramway Blvd and FR 333. From Tramway about 1 mile north of the road to the Tram…turn northeast onto FR 333 at the Juan Tabo Picnic Area sign. Take FR 333 about 1.9 miles and continue past the Rock Pillars another 0.3 miles on FR 333D to the parking lot on the left. Pay USFS fee when not on official mission otherwise you get a ticket from zealous lot attendant.
  • Pine Flat Picnic Area

    • Forest Service area about 7 miles south of Tijeras. From I-40 take exit 175 into Tijeras…south on NM 337 for about 6.9 miles to the picnic ground entrance sign on the east or left side.
  • Placitas BLM East

    • BLM open space north of the town of Placitas. From I25 and US 550 in Bernalillo, drive east on Hwy 165 for 7 miles through the town of Placitas and turn left (north) on Camino de Las Huertes. Continue on Camino de Las Huertes for 3.6 mi as it winds through the neighborhood…. turn left (north) on LLano del Norte (gravel road) and continue for 0.3 mi to the intersection with Toad Rd and turn left (west). Continue for 0.2 mi to the sign Placitas Open Space and turn right (north). Stay on the gravel road and keep to the right just past the cattle grate. Continue north to the powerlines, turn left to the parking spot.
  • Roosevelt Middle School – Tijeras

    • Park type area around the middle school in Tijeras. From I-40 take exit 175 into Tijeras…south on NM 337 for about 0.4 miles then west on Public School Rd about 0.2 miles to a parking area.
  • Sabino Canyon Open Space

    • Bernalillo County Open Space located directly south of Cedro Peak Campground. About 117 acres located west and east of FR 242.From I-40…take exit 175 into Tijeras. Take NM 337 south for 6.3 miles…turn east or left onto Juan Tomas Rd (FR 242). Go another 0.6 mile turn north or left onto FR 252. The parking area is 0.1 mile further.
  • San Ysidro BLM Land

    • Park type area just west of the Corrales Lateral which cuts through the western campus of Sandia View Academy off Corrales Rd. From Alameda Blvd/NM528…take Corrales Rd north 4.2 miles. Turn west or left onto Academy Dr/Elm Dr. Go another 0.2 miles before final left onto Sandia View Ln to parking.

    • Forest Service area several miles up the Sandia Crest Highway. Same entrance as Cienega Canyon. From I-40…take NM 14 north 5.8 miles. Take NM 536 (Crest Highway) west 1.9 miles then turn left into Cienega Canyon area and then immediately turn right in right into Sulfur Canyon area.
  • 10K Trailhead

    • Forest Service trail access about 10.5 miles up the Sandia Crest Highway. From I-40…take NM 14 north 5.8 miles. Take NM 536 (Crest Highway) west 10.5 miles to the sign and parking areas on both sides of road. Team normally uses north side parking.
  • Tree Spring Trail

  • West End of Northern

    • Semi-rugged undeveloped land near far west end of Northern Blvd in Rio Rancho. From NM528 in Rio Rancho…west on Northern Blvd abt 13.8 miles…past 60th ST to near the mesa edge. West of 60th ST the road is just dirt track.

  • Zuzax – Lower Pine Trail

    • Forest area access south of I-40 accessed from Zuzax. From I-40 east to Zuzax…exit near mile marker 178. Turn south and travel back west a short distance on old US 66 or the frontage road to make a south or left turn onto Bartolo Baca Rd. At the fork…go right onto Kennedy Lane. Proceed approximately 0.6 miles to Forest Road. At Forest Road and Campo Road and turn right onto FR 462 then proceed 0.1 mile to trailhead parking on the left.
