Training a search dog is a journey, not a destination. Frequent and regular training is essential to developing and maintaining search dog skills. In addition, dog handlers and field support members must develop and maintain proficiency in a variety of search and rescue skills such as land navigation, map interpretation, canine scent theory, search techniques, first-aid (human and canine), and communications. All members are expected to maintain a minimum training attendance of 30% each 6-month period during the year.
SSD normally trains at various locations within or nearby the Albuquerque metro area each Tuesday evening throughout the year and on one Saturday and two Sundays each month. We also strive to put on specialty or intensive 3-day focus trainings at least once a year and join other canine SAR teams around the state for joint training. A monthly business meeting is held on the first Tuesday of each month in lieu of training.
